the moving part: Sledges do the work here in season. Teams are harnessed at the village and set out over open ground towards the lake, then come back to the same yard they left. The sledge is part of the place rather than something brought in for a day, and the village keeps its own animals and gear.

what it joins: It joins the cluster of cabins to the frozen lake below them. On one side there is timber, smoke and light from windows; on the other, flat white with nothing built on it at all. The sledge crosses that ground and makes the lake part of the village for as long as it is out.

what rides on it: Guests ride wrapped and sitting low. Bedding for the animals, feed, firewood and warm drinks ride out on the same runners. When the light goes, lamps and dry clothing come back in on the sledge that carried people out.

what never moves: The lake below does not move under its ice, and the cabins do not move either. The treeline holds its edge, the yard keeps its shape, and the same ground is used until the season closes.

the moving part: Evening is when the moving part starts. Sleighs leave the resort yard for open ground away from the lit buildings, wait out there, and return over the ground they came across. The resort keeps the animals, the harness and the sleighs, and they work from the same yard through the winter season.

what it joins: It joins the built part of the resort to a clearing where nothing is lit at all. The buildings hold heat and light; the open place holds neither, which is the whole reason for going out. A sleigh links the two for the length of an evening, and then the link is put away.

what rides on it: Passengers ride under covers. Lamps, flasks, spare gloves and dry boots ride out with them, and the animals carry themselves. Nothing is delivered and nothing is collected: the load going out and the load coming back are close to the same.

what never moves: The clearing stays where it is. No structure is added to it, no path is surfaced, and when the sleigh has gone the ground is left with the marks of runners and nothing else.

the moving part: Two villages belong to one operator here, and something runs between them. West Village is a separate village with its own buildings and its own yard, and guests, staff and supplies are carried across to the other site rather than walking. The transfer belongs to the resort and works entirely on its own ground.

what it joins: It joins one village to the other. Each has its own rooms, its own kitchen and its own working yard, and neither is a wing of the other. The transfer makes the two behave as a single address for meals and for evening arrangements, without ever joining the buildings themselves.

what rides on it: Guests ride across with outdoor clothing already on. Food, clean linen, tools and fuel ride the same way, since a kitchen on one site can serve people who are sleeping on the other. Staff cross more often than anybody staying here.

what never moves: The distance between the two villages does not change. Each keeps its own snow, its own trees and its own quiet, and neither is brought closer to the other by the arrangement.

the moving part: Snowmobiles and sledges are the working machines here in season. They are kept at the hotel, started at the shore and taken out over the lake ice, then brought back to the same building. Ropes, boxes and a sledge behind the machine make the arrangement a load carrier rather than only a ride.

what it joins: It joins the hotel shore to the ice of Lake Inari, which is open ground for as long as it holds. The hotel stands among trees at the edge of the water; the lake is flat, unbuilt and wide. The machines make the second place reachable from the first while the season lasts.

what rides on it: Guests ride behind, on the sledge or in the seat. Gear rides with them: fuel, warm layers, food, tools and sometimes fishing equipment. What comes back is heavier or lighter than what went out, depending entirely on the day.

what never moves: The shore does not move. The hotel keeps its place among the trees, the lake keeps its shape under the ice, and the same doorway is used for going out and for coming back in.
