What moves here

A moving part, on this site, is something the place owns and works itself. It belongs to the hotel or the resort, it goes out and comes back, and it does that again the next day. A funicular on a private slope counts. A launch with a crew counts. A sledge harnessed in a yard counts.

What does not count is the way a reader reaches the door. We write nothing about airports, flights, roads, parking or connections, because that is the reader's own business and it changes with every arrival. The part we describe is the one that stays with the building after everybody has gone home.

Each entry carries four labels, and each has a job. the moving part: is the mechanism or craft itself and what it looks like. what it joins: is the pair of places it holds together. what rides on it: is the load, human or otherwise. what never moves: is what stands still around all of it.

There is not a single figure anywhere in these descriptions, and that is deliberate. No times, no intervals, no lengths, no heights, no capacities. Figures of that kind go out of date quietly, and a guide that carries them starts lying without noticing. Where a number would go, we put the thing itself.

We also never promise that a mechanism will be working on the day a reader turns up. Some of these run in season only. Others stop for maintenance, for weather, or for reasons the operator does not publish. Anything on this site describes what a place keeps, not what it guarantees.

The line marked CHECK THIS BEFORE is preparation, not complaint. It names the one thing worth settling with the hotel in advance, usually a season, an address or an operator. None of these hotels is being criticised for it, and none of them has asked us to write anything.

The line marked SEEN ON gives the month and year when we last opened the published material behind an entry. It is a date on our reading, not on the place. If a mechanism has changed since then, that line is the honest measure of how stale our description may be.

Our material is published material: hotel and resort websites, operator statements, architectural writing and trade press. Two editors have run this guide since twenty twenty-one, and a photographer works with us. We do not publish stay reports, and we do not claim to have travelled to any of these addresses.

We publish no prices, no stars, no ratings, no booking and no paid placements. Nothing here can be bought, and no hotel can pay to be described differently. A hotel may send a factual correction, and we will make it, and that is the whole of the relationship.
